"The several Tantra Sāstra such as the “Svachhanda Tantra” and “Yoginīhridaya” contain a detailed description of the Saptamātrikā and Astamātrikās which is both impressive and illustrative (…) Similar set of Mātrikās (…) is found on the edge of Mārdendeya tank of Puri. (…) Except Chāmundā, all other figures are associates with babies and have four hands each. The facial expression of the Mātrikās while holding and caressing the child with their right lower hands have celestial smile in the facial expression, probably lost in meditation and bhava – samādhī. (…) The iconography of these images helps in assigning the images of this group to the glorious rule of Sōmavamśī Kings."
